The
Alberta
Game
Warden
Association
is
proud
to
contribute
to
the
Hunting
For
Tomorrow
Youth
and
First
Time
Hunter
Mentorship
Program
This
Mentorship
program
has
the
following
objectives:
- Provide
a
safe
and
controlled
training
environment
for
youth
and
first
time
hunters.
- Provide
a
positive
and
organized
method
of
access
for
hunters
- Maximize
the
harvest
results
to
reduce
potential
hazards
and
safety
risks
on
the
property.
In
the
second
year
of
the
Mentorship
program,
it
expanded
from
one
location
to
four.
These
locations
are
areas
that
are
not
generally
suitable
to
be
open
to
the
general
hunting
community,
(due
to
issues
of
access,
security,
safety,
etc.)
but
have
high
concentrations
of
animals,
which
make
them
ideal
for
youth
and
first
time
hunters.
The
2004
locations
included
the
Edmonton
International
Airport,
the
4
Wing
Airport
at
Cold
Lake,
Devonian
Botanical
Gardens
and
a
private
ranch
in
southern
Alberta.
The
participants
and
Mentors
attend
an
orientation
workshop
that
confirms
roles
and
responsibilities,
safety,
ethics,
technical
skills,
bowhunter
education
and
reporting
requirements.
The
program
generally
operates
from
early
September
to
the
first
week
of
December.
Each
Mentor
identifies
dates
that
they
are
available
to
serve
as
a
Mentor
and
communication
between
the
Mentors
and
participants
takes
place
regarding
logistics
for
meeting,
etc.
The
Mentor
places
the
participants
in
a
tree
stand
and
then
sits
in
the
nearest
accompanying
tree
stand
or
joins
the
participant
in
a
ground
blind.
Each
Mentor
is
required
to
complete
an
activity
report
after
each
hunt,
which
is
summarized
on
a
monthly
basis
and
submitted
to
the
property
owners.
A
final
wrap-up
report
with
photos,
comments
from
the
participants
and
hunting
activity
statistics
are
provided
to
all
sponsors
and
program
partners.
In
order
to
facilitate
this
project,
a
variety
of
equipment
is
required
including
ground
blinds,
tree
stands,
tree
steps,
safety
belts,
etc.
The
program
involves
a
ground
blind
large
enough
for
the
Mentor
and
the
participant
or
two
tree
stands
at
each
location
(one
stand
for
the
participant
and
one
stand
for
the
Mentor).
The
Hunting
For
Tomorrow
Foundation
gratefully
acknowledges
the
support
and
sponsorship
of
the
Alberta
Game
Warden
Association
for
one
stand
location
(which
includes
two
tree
stands,
safety
belts
and
tree
steps).
